Food for Thought...
The health benefits of grass-fed beef compared to grain fed beef are numerous! Because the cattle do not consume any type of grain or corn, grass-fed beef is much leaner and has about 2/3 less calories than typical grain-finished beef. Grass-fed beef has almost twice as much Conjugated Linoleic Acid, a fatty acid that has been associated with anti-inflammatory benefits and improving immunity. There is typically 50% more omega-3 fatty acid in a portion of grass-fed beef compared to standard grain-fed beef. Omega-3 plays a vital role in our brain operations, our cells, and is the most heart-friendly fat. Because the cattle graze on only grass, grass-fed beef contains higher level of important nutrients such as Vitamin A, B6, B12, Vitamin E, Iron, Zinc and antioxidants.
It typically takes up to a year longer to get grass-fed cattle to reach an appropriate weight before they go to the butcher. Feedlots typically use antibiotics and hormones to increase weight on cattle quick. We do not use any hormones or antibiotics for growth purposes on our farm. Our grass-fed cattle rely on natural forages for their diet, eating fresh grass during the warmer seasons and nutritious hay during the fall and winter seasons. Because family farms typically handle smaller quantities of cattle than the large feed lots, grass-fed beef farms are typically paid for the quality of the beef they provide versus just the quantity.
